About Carp Camp Parade …
Once upon a time, early arrivals at Winfield would camp without wristbands until the ticket trailer opened on the day before the stages opened. Those who had arrived early would go to the ticket trailer on Wednesday afternoon and exchange their tickets for their wristbands. A group of campers (then known as Gatherin' in the Grass) would go as a group. This trip from Carp Camp (highlighted with an aqua circle on the map at the left) became ritualized and now is known as the Carp Camp Parade. Campmeister Dave Firestine makes sure that everyone in the parade can have a silly hat and face mask. He brings an ample supply for those who didn't bring their own. Considering that he comes from Tucson in a VW bus and brings camping gear sufficient for a two-week stay as well as his mandolin, it is amazing to me that he can fit in this supply of party gear, but he does.
Campers now get their wristbands up to a week earlier, but the traditional parade continues, enhancing the Winfield experience for everyone. Over the years, this colorful event has been the subject of one of my Memory of the Week features: 1999 1998 1997 1996
Now, it is with pleasure that I share with you not only a view of the parade, but also the sound that goes with it.
